Opening up the Worldwide ExoLab Platform

The genesis of Magnitude was 10 years ago today! On that first day of summer in 2013, Tony and I decided to bring learning to the very edge of human discovery – and, with a bit of luck – the opportunity to bring others with us to peer over that edge. As a for profit company these experiences for the most part have been behind a pay wall. That changes today. Today, I am exhilarated…

Look Back: Year 6

The 2018-2019 year was the beginning of expanded international growth for Magnitude. We kicked the fiscal year off in San Francisco that July receiving an Innovation Award in STEM education at the ISS R&D conference. August had us joining a NASA contingent to Puerto Rico for university outreach. A partnership was launched in Germany with CodeDoor, and our South African NGO partner i-Innovate continued to reach underserved communities. Along the way we picked up 3…

San Antonio students show off their work on WEX Foundation’s STEM day

Students in San Antonio worked in teams to construct their rovers and the balloon payload over multiple weekends, using the Magnitude.io CanSat to collect telemetry data and visualize them in real-time. Activities included the Lunar Caves remote vehicle, high-powered rocket, and high altitude balloon reaching about 100,000 ft. The WEX Foundation, LCATS provides a safe and engaging environment for these young learners to broaden their skills and curiosity. We need more of these ultimate STEM…

CanSat High Altitude Balloon Launch – USC: Project Payload

CanSat High Altitude Balloon Launch – USC: Project Payload

USC Viterbi School of Engineering, K12 STEM Center has a program called Project Payload. The focus of the program is for girls to experience engineering first hand. On January 25th 2020, we were brought in to facilitate the launch and recovery of their experimental payload aboard a High Altitude Balloon. Magnitude.io creates extraordinary experiences for learning both in the stratosphere as well as in earth orbit aboard the International Space Station to schools across the...

My dream is to work for NASA – Stockton 2019

Not only were these students totally engaged, but they were also eager to mentor and share with younger students what they have learned. The data and programming team kept the realtime telemetry data being collected. The payload design team secured all the internal experiment and positioned all the electronics. The weather team kept the rest of the class informed on weather condition and flight prediction. The flight management team filed the Notice to Airmen. Their…

Learn how to stream real-time data with Excel from Steve

Learn how to stream real-time data with Excel from Steve

Real-time data with Excel Stephan Unterholzner, a Science teacher at the Sierra High School in Manteca, California, has successfully captured and visualized the real-time data into Microsoft Excel from a CanSat High Altitude Balloon flight reaching almost 100,000 ft. We all call him "Steve U!" Steve has been using Microsoft tools for a long time. This time he is super excited about the new Excel ability to stream live data with IoT devices. Steve would...

SF Friends School Launched a High Altitude Balloon

This year, my classes embarked on a mission of launching a high altitude weather balloon, in cooperation with Magnitude.io. I'm the 8th-grade science teacher at the San Francisco Friends School and though I've been teaching for over a dozen years, I've never done a project like this before. We started the project in January when Ted and Tony came into our class (we are lucky to live close by!) for a kickoff to explain the...

Tommie Ebanez at Thornton Jr High launched the CanSat High Altitude Balloon

“Ever since I heard about Magnitude.io, I was incredibly excited to push this type of project in my own classroom. Fast forward 4 years when we were finally able to put that into reality when we launched our first weather balloon on March 29th, 2018. With the help of Ted, Tony, and Kareem I was able to guide my students in developing an environmental sensor. Initially, we tested for CO2 but in the following year we…

Girls in STEM – Janelle Wellons at JPL

Janelle Wellons of Jet Propulsion Lab would like to use her story to inspire other young women to go for their dream with perseverance. We met Janelle Wellons, a recent MIT graduate, at the Engaging Girls in STEM event organized by Anthony Quan of the Los Angeles County Office of Education. Her smile, her positive attitude, and her story touched us and she became one of our advisors. Her mission is to engage and inspire more women to…

High Altitude Balloon at the Boy Scouts National Jamboree

High Altitude Balloon at the Boy Scouts National Jamboree

On July 25th, 2017, team Magnitude.io had an incredible experience launching a high altitude balloon at the National Boy Scouts Jamboree. The Mt. Diablo Silverado Venture Scouts began learning how to capture atmospheric conditions with the sensors on the CanSat a few months before the event through a series of lectures and engineering challenges. This included weather modeling, flight path predictions, and arranging for FAA flight approval by filing a Notice to Airmen. Everyone in the…
