SF Friends School Launched a High Altitude Balloon

This year, my classes embarked on a mission of launching a high altitude weather balloon, in cooperation with Magnitude.io. I'm the 8th-grade science teacher at the San Francisco Friends School and though I've been teaching for over a dozen years, I've never done a project like this before. We started the project in January when Ted and Tony came into our class (we are lucky to live close by!) for a kickoff to explain the...

Kentucky State University – STEM Conference for Minority Male

Minority males are underrepresented in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) workforce as compared to their representation in the US population. Roadblocks that continue to challenge minority males include: disparity in access to high-quality STEM educational resources, a lack of role models, and a shortage of highly trained, minority STEM educators. Drawing on findings from current work, this Design and Development Launch Project, led by Morgan State University, will build on an existing regional…

BAAQMD: CanSat Air Quality Student Expo in San Leandro

BAAQMD: CanSat Air Quality Student Expo in San Leandro

The community came together to share and learn the importance the air quality is to our health and what we can do to improve it. Led by their teacher, Megan Thaler, and TK-12 Instructional Coach, Gaia Pine, students from Environmental Science and Chemistry classes ran the experiment, captured sensor data, concluded the findings and helped setup the Air Quality Student Expo at the Barbara Lee Health and Wellness Center in San Leandro. Using the Magnitude.io CanSat: Air Quality Monitor and with the...

Tommie Ebanez at Thornton Jr High launched the CanSat High Altitude Balloon

“Ever since I heard about Magnitude.io, I was incredibly excited to push this type of project in my own classroom. Fast forward 4 years when we were finally able to put that into reality when we launched our first weather balloon on March 29th, 2018. With the help of Ted, Tony, and Kareem I was able to guide my students in developing an environmental sensor. Initially, we tested for CO2 but in the following year we…

Lodi Rocket Launch Day 2018

The 2018 Lodi Rocket Day took place at the Orvis Ranch in Farmington on April 15th. 5 bus loads of students, teachers, and parents came out to experience the 3rd annual rocket launch event. This is the day students test their simulated satellites “CanSats”, radio equipment, and capture flight data. A learning experience is usually not seen like this until University. This project-based learning CanSat Program, is fully supported by the Lodi Unified School District and other districts in the…

Manteca Rocket Launch Day 2018

Now in its fourth year, Manteca Unified School District, completed its fourth Rocket Day! Good call by the President of Lunar Rocket Club, David Raimondi, on picking the date to launch despite concern on weather condition. From dense fog at sunrise, the sky cleared by 9:30 and it turned out to be a gorgeous and sunny day with almost no wind. Students come to Snow Ranch once a year to launch and test their CanSat in high…

Girls in STEM – Janelle Wellons at JPL

Janelle Wellons of Jet Propulsion Lab would like to use her story to inspire other young women to go for their dream with perseverance. We met Janelle Wellons, a recent MIT graduate, at the Engaging Girls in STEM event organized by Anthony Quan of the Los Angeles County Office of Education. Her smile, her positive attitude, and her story touched us and she became one of our advisors. Her mission is to engage and inspire more women to…

High Altitude Balloon at the Boy Scouts National Jamboree

High Altitude Balloon at the Boy Scouts National Jamboree

On July 25th, 2017, team Magnitude.io had an incredible experience launching a high altitude balloon at the National Boy Scouts Jamboree. The Mt. Diablo Silverado Venture Scouts began learning how to capture atmospheric conditions with the sensors on the CanSat a few months before the event through a series of lectures and engineering challenges. This included weather modeling, flight path predictions, and arranging for FAA flight approval by filing a Notice to Airmen. Everyone in the…
