Fixative release in Tube-2
Mission Day 36: The science team has been watching the development of the seedlings in Tube #2 of the experiment on-orbit very closely. We are starting to observe some changes in the seedling that suggest that it is not going to survive much longer. A chemical fixative was injected into tube #2 that will preserve the seedlings for return to Earth and post-flight analysis. In the time-lapse video, you can observe some of the interesting properties of a fluid in microgravity!

Fixative release in Tube-3
On Day 18, we commanded the release of the preservative glutaraldehyde, what you observed is the slow release of the liquid from the pipette (green tube) in the center of the tube. We believe that the preservative has remained at the top of the tube, sitting on top of the air inside the tube. The jump in timestamps is an artifact of the higher frame rate used during active commanding of the orbital lab.
The seedlings in this tube were too far away from the media and their roots were starting to dry and atrophy, so rather than lose them entirely, we decided to fix that tube so we could capture the cellular responses to the stresses of launch. In the near future, we will be doing the same thing in the center tube, and then finally in the left tube at the end of the mission. This will preserve the plant tissues for post-flight analysis, where we will do a series of microscopic analyses, and if the tissues are of satisfactory quality, some genetics analysis.
