Longfellow Middle School’s CanSat Is Recovered

We are super happy to announce that the Longfellow CanSat was found on August 7th, 2015 by John Sweeney, after being lost for 120 days in Suisun Bay.  John Sweeney, the owner of Chipps Island, found it on his island  while he and his wife were collecting garbage landed on their island shore.  The location where the CanSat was found is across the channel from Pittsburg’s Marina. See the photo below. The CanSat from Berkeley Longfellow Middle School reached 100,000 feet somewhere over Bay Point, California! See the videos below.

This video captured the excitement of the students during preflight preparation and the countdown for the liftoff in their schoolyard. The day was overcast, so a part of the video is completely white when the CanSat was floating  in the cloud. The Bay Area is beautiful.

I own several large islands in the delta and my wife is a Eco artist who uses trash from our islands shores and turns it into amazing art. We were out bagging trash when we came across it. We find dozens of styrofoam coolers each week. The trash problem in the delta is bad. So anyway we saw yours all wrapped around a log. Lugged it back to the boat and saw the paper to call. Might be cool to show the kids were it landed and how two great stories crossed paths.

My wife was just featured in the state fair and is trying to gain awareness regarding the issues with one use plastic ending up in the delta. Two great projects collide 🙂
